Jeff Howe is a contributing editor at Wired magazine, where he covers the media and entertainment industry. In June of 2006 he published an article for Wired titled "The Rise of Crowdsourcing." That article has name grown to become the book - Crowdsourcing.
Jeff is my guest on this episode of the Marketing podcast where he shares this concept and discusses how the small business can take advantage of it.
One of my favorite ideas that came out of our discussion is the fact that branding is essentially a form of crowdsourcing.

With each new advancement in connectivity and mobility outsourcing the hard stuff just gets easier and easier for the small business. In this episode of the Duct Tape Marketing podcast I turn once again to Tom Wilson, Executive Director of AT&Ts Small Business Group, to talk about small business IT stuff
We covered two new offerings in this episode
Remote backup of data. For a low monthly fee you can have key data backed up nightly, encrypted and secure using something called AT&T Remote Vault.
Tech Support for Small Business - Through an offering called TechSupport360 small business owners pay a per seat monthly fee to get access to all kinds of tech support. The basics, such as configuring software, removing spyware and tuning up a computer can be handled by giving the tech access to your machine, but the part I absolutely love about this offering is the ability to get help with PowerPoint or Word files or adding a new email signature to an Outlook account.

Testing just might be the small business marketers greatest tool - and yet, so few take the time to do it at all. The arguments against robust testing are all but gone - cost is not a factor, lack of tools is not a factor and certainly the Internet has made information about testing readily available.
Bryan Eisenberg, author of Always Be Testing, visited with me about this very thing for this episode of the Duct Tape Marketing Podcast.

The Zingerman's Podcast - Tue, 02 Sep 2008
Marketing podcast with Zingerman's Community of Businesses (Click to listen, right click and Save As to download - subscribe now via iTunes
For this episode of the Duct Tape Marketing podcast I had an opportunity to learn about a truly unique business located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. My guests, Ari and Mo, are principles in a business known as Zingerman's Community of Businesses. Zingerman's started out as a deli that grew so popular franchising nationwide seemed inevitable. However, the owners determined another path.
Instead of growing the deli business beyond where they wanted to go, they started others businesses around their single store. Mail order, catering and coffee roasting just to name a few. But, the uniqueness of the model is that all the businesses were started by managing partners who have a share of the ownership in the business - thus the community moniker. Anyone is free to come to Zingerman's with an idea for a business and pitch it as a candidate to join the community. Several of the existing businesses were launched by Zingerman's employees.
